I’ve been playing video games all my life. Many of the games I have played in the past are so good, if not for my top three favorites, I don’t know if I could even make a top five or top ten game list of all time. They stand that far apart from the rest of the pack. My favorite game(s) used to be Sonic the hedgehog. It was my favorite every since I had a favorite. I didn’t think any game would top Sonic for me. Little did I know SEGA would out do themselves yet again. What game could have been so good that it would dethrone Sonic from my number one position? What game could leave a strong enough presence to crush nostalgia? Most importantly what game could match the play time I put into the sonic series? I’ve put hundreds and hundreds of hours, maybe even thousands of hours, into that series.
That game, which is also made by SEGA, my favorite company, is Phantasy Star Universe. That game was s fun it not only became my favorite game of all time. The series became my favorite series as well. You may be asking yourself “what is Phantasy Star Universe?” Phantasy Star Universe, abbreviated as PSU was a MMO for Playstation 2 and PC. I had the PC version. This game didn’t have the best graphics. It didn’t have the best story. In fact the story was horrible. What it did have, which is the most important thing in gaming, was fun factor. The game play was so fun and the replay value was so high that no other game comes close. The gap between my favorite and second favorite games is somewhat big. The combat is in real time. No other RPG or MMO has even come close to matching this series in real time combat in my opinion. Pure gameplay pretty much sums up every thing I need to say about how great this game is.
More over, Phantasy Star Universe is not the only good game in the series. Phantasy Star Online episode three, a card game for Gamecube, would have been my favorite I believe if I would have been able to play the game online. The newest edition to the Phantasy Star Online series, Phantasy Star Online 2, is no joke either. This game is amazing! It has taken many concepts of Phantasy Star Universe and improved on them. The story is leaps and bounds better. The graphics are up to date. (I’m not a graphics kind of guy but some people look at that type of thing) The game play as the potential to surpass its predecessor. This game has a lot going for it. For now this game is only out in Japan. I play on the Japanese servers. Anybody interested in Phantasy Star Online 2 has to either learn some Japanese and sign up on the Japanese servers or wait for the western release for the game. I could not wait therefore I play.
If anyone of you reading this article never had the opportunity to play the Phantasy Star series I highly suggest you give this series a try. I don’t think you will regret it. I know I didn’t!
